Secondary review – Mechanical considerations required to effect increase in thermal performance for specified condenser
Structural modifications to the existing condenser may be necessary for improving the thermal performance. The mechanical condition needs to be considered in any power uprate evaluation once the thermal review has been completed.
Changes to equipment associated with the steam surface condenser need to be reviewed in parallel with those of the condenser.
The structural integrity of any proposed modifications must always be reviewed by a competent engineer/organization.
Tertiary review – Complete evaluation of condenser internals, connections and existing ancillary equipment
Most uprates will have an increase in steam flow associated with design improvements to the steam turbine. Within the condenser, an additional review of internal components also will be necessary.

During power uprates it is not uncommon for the design conditions of drains to the condenser to be revised. Consideration should be given to the effect of different design conditions based on the possible limitations of the existing connection line size, materials and/or internal dispersion devices.
The design data on the original condenser connection list provided by the OEM should be verified.
Drains that will be affected by power uprate must be properly identified and a competent review undertaken to provide the expected revised design conditions so that a condenser design engineer can review the possible impacts.
In the absence of any existing drawings that detail the internal dispersion device for each connection, an inspection of the existing condenser internals can often identify the type of internal dispersion device on each of the condenser connections. The condition of the connection should be noted with the intent of ascertaining if any revisions to the condenser connection design conditions will adversely affect the operation of the condenser.
